Focus on Sauna— Loss weight
Scientific studies back up sauna – related weight loss claims. A Hokkaido University experiment showed that 30 minutes at 40°C raised resting metabolic rates by 13% for hours. High temperatures activate mitochondria, the cells’ energy producers, enhancing fat – to – energy conversion. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that the body burns more energy to cool down in high – heat, increasing metabolism. Infrared saunas can reportedly burn around 600 calories.
Research from East China Normal University and others, published in Cell in 2022, suggests that sauna – like warmth may turn fat – storing white fat into heat – generating brown fat. Animal experiments showed reduced fat depots and liver lipid levels, though human trials are needed.
However, sauna – based weight loss has limitations. Most of the immediate weight loss is water, not fat. Once hydrated, the weight returns. Also, the actual fat burned in a sauna is minimal—only 50 – 100 kcal per session, much less than jogging.
For effective use of saunas in weight loss:
- Pair with exercise: Use a sauna for 10 – 15 minutes post – aerobic activity like running or swimming to enhance metabolism and aid recovery.
- Mind the frequency: Limit usage to 2 – 3 times a week, 15 minutes per session, and replenish electrolytes to avoid dehydration.
- Adopt a healthy diet: Consume a low – calorie, high – fiber diet to ensure the body burns more energy than it takes in.
Saunas can assist in weight loss, but only as part of a holistic approach that includes proper nutrition and regular exercise.
